Hanging Out With London’s Street Dance Scene in Own The Floor Sessions

This one’s for the dancers!

Looking to actually dance during a night out in London? Own The Floor Sessions is a monthly event to “train, exchange, socialize and celebrate dance culture” in the city.

This amazingly free event is hosted by dance community and media company The Capsule, and supported by Nike. Attendees are encouraged to wear their best Nike fits for a chance to win prizes. Along with sleek photo-ops, neon lighting and an industrial interior, Own The Floor has carefully constructed an experience that oozes coolness and style.

We went to the March 22 edition of the event, featuring DJs Spinada, D-bo and Geni Lou, playing a mix of hip-hop, house, afro, funk, breakbeats and more — perfect for any style.

The event was held in Kachette in Shoreditch, a spacious event venue located under a railway arch. Exposed brick and pipes added character to the space, while the concrete flooring and high ceilings brought much-needed cool air to the fiery atmosphere.

The doors opened promptly at 6pm until late. Free, healthy (non-alcoholic) refreshments were provided to give dancers the energy to keep dancing all night long.

The highlight of the night was an exhibition battle between all-female crews—AIM COLLECTIVE and RARE COLLECTIVE.

Previous Own The Floor Sessions had curated interesting matchups such as Afro vs House dancers to break up the night and showcase established or up-and-coming dancers in the community.
