Sentosa

A Slice of Southeast Asia in Bermondsey

Want to feel as if you’ve stepped out of Changi Airport in Singapore?

Look no further than Sentosa, an understated Bermondsey spot serving authentic Singaporean and Malaysian cuisine.

The small but often bustling local joint has a cozy atmosphere, with warm yellow lights, leafy decor, exposed industrial piping and what looks to be a heavily stocked bar.

With friendly customer service and packed seating arrangements, the interior slightly evokes the ambience of a busy Southeast Asian food court at night.

A glimpse into their menu shows that they aren’t afraid to tackle Southeast Asia’s hottest hits. You could start off with an appetizer of Ayam Satay (chicken skewers), dive into a hearty main of Roti Canai (flatbread) or Char Kuay Teow (stir-fried rice noodles), and finish off with a Malay Ice Teh Tarik (pulled milk tea) for a truly authentic experience.

The establishment’s must-have is their deliciously complex Sentosa Curry Laksa, perfect for London weather! This iconic dish is a medley of prawns, chicken, tofu, egg and fish balls nestled on top of not-too-thick rice noodles, and bathed in a thick and spicy coconut broth.

We also had the roasted Singaporean Hainan Chicken Rice, which was simpler but just as flavourful and fragrant. The smooth butter rice and crispy chicken combination is an absolute textural treat for your tastebuds.

For drinks, we ordered Singapore Tiger Beer and Soya Milk With Grass Jelly, which were good additions to our meal, though not as memorable as the dishes

Although it is only a 9-minute walk from London Bridge station, Sentosa is a little bit out-of-the way unless you are a local or looking to explore the borough.

However, it is a great spot for Southeast Asian cuisine if you are looking to avoid the crowds in Chinatown.
