Omotesando Koffee

A perfect match(a) for the matcha lovers!

With the rise of matcha obsession, there is a hidden matcha spot at Tottenham Court Road called Omotesando Koffee. Omotesando Koffee started as a small coffee shop in Tokyo, Japan and has expanded to several international cities—-London being one of them.

The store from the outside is not very obvious, as in you really have to be looking for it to find it. I think it’s because its tucked away from the busy street with its simplistic black exterior and also the name of the shop isn’t displayed largely—a quiet and cold façade.

But the inside is interestingly the opposite, it still keeps its minimalist aesthetic with wooden furniture which gives a simple, warm vibe; almost as if you are in the suburban areas of Japan.

The inside is also literally loud because it’s filled with people, who need their coffee or matcha to carry on with their day.

The entire store really emulates the Japanese way of life in simplicity, which makes sense since the founder of this chain coffee shop had wanted to incorporate key parts of Japanese culture and tradition.

There are several types of coffees and matcha drinks to choose from and they mainly range between £4-5, which is the average coffee price here in London. However, unlike other coffee chains, Omotesando’s quality is rich and flavorful which is always an extra point if most places offer (more or less) the same price.

I was debating whether to get the iced matcha latte or the iced matchaccino. I didn’t actually know what a “Matchaccino” was since it was my first time hearing the name, but when I asked the barista, they explained to me that it was basically the same as the ice matcha latte, but it had a foamy finish instead.

I asked them what they would recommend, and they said that if you are more into the richer matcha flavor, then the ice matcha latte would do the trick. If you like the milder one, then the Matchaccino would be suitable.

I ordered the iced matcha, and it is literally one of the best matchas I have ever had (but not that I have a lot of experience with matcha; I literally just started to like it). The matcha had this natural sweetness to it, which is a characteristic of a high-quality matcha. I literally finished my drink within 10 minutes and wanted more of it immediately.

I would definitely recommend trying this place for your next matcha boost and to taste the comparison to other places, you’ll definitely notice it.
