Happy Sky Bakery

Having one of their breads will leave you on cloud 9!

Bread is probably one of my favourite snacks to have growing up; I know some people will argue that bread is not a snack, rather it’s a staple in a meal.

But in many Asian countries, bread is considered a snack which are readily available in small bakeries, convenient stores and many other place where one gets snacks.

Many of these breads are usually sweet rather making it the perfect snack to have when you’re feeling peckish. In Japan, these sweet breads are a popular snack and now you can taste some of these delights here in London.

Tucked away in a small alley in Oxford Street, Happy Sky Bakery is a small Japanese artisan bakery that serves a variety of breads and loaves of Shokupan (milk bread) that Japan is well-known for.

The bakery is really small and there is usually a line that forms outside the bakery because the inside can only fit one or two customers at a time.

The line moves pretty quick because you just select what you like and go. In the shop, there is a small counter along with a display of the baked goods and on the walls, there are shelves of the shokupan and their own merchandise.

The bread selection was surprisingly wide—from savoury to sweet breads. I decided to buy one from each flavour to have a fair judgement of the taste. I got the Teriyaki Chicken bun and the Matcha Cinnamon Bun.

I also wanted to get the Dirty Matcha Bun because it looked unique but I realized I would be walking and I don’t want any complications while doing so.

The bread is baked fresh everyday by passionate Japanese bakers and they don’t use any preservatives in order to bring out the natural flavours of their quality ingredients.

You definitely can taste the freshness and flavour of the bread in each bite; I tucked into the Teriyaki Chicken Bun first. I was not disappointed with the first bite because there was a generous amount of chicken on top and the bread was flavourful.

However, I did think the chicken was a bit dry and wished that some teriyaki sauce was drizzle on top of it. Overall, it was packed with flavours and it wasn’t heavy like regular sandwiches.

Next, I devoured the Matcha Cinnamon Bun; again, it was delicious. The bread was moist and light, tasting of cinnamon while the matcha drizzle was naturally sweet that really topped this bread off!

The staff were really friendly and they looked really passionate in what they do which makes the bread even tastier. If you’re a bread enthusiast and wouldn’t mind spending a little more for freshly baked goodness, then do visit the Happy Sky Bakery!
