Duck & Waffle

Savoury waffles with a ducking view!

Located at the very top of Heron Tower, near Liverpool Street Station, is a restaurant and bar that serves savoury waffles and other sweet and savoury treats.

This waffle house is not like any other; one might expect a cutesy café when hearing the name “Duck & Waffle”, or at least that’s what I thought when my friend recommended we eat there. I didn’t expect the place to be located at the 40th floor of a skyscraper; the lift ride up was an experience itself because it was the fastest lift I have ever been and you get to see a glimpse of the view that you would have in the restaurant.

The interior of the restaurant was modernistic with jars on the ceilings as decoration, Monaco-inspired blue floor tiles and a wall with “graffitis”, giving a creative vibe to the place. The windows were ceiling to floor which allows the sunlight to pour into the place, infusing a warm atmosphere and a wonderful view of London. However, I disliked the small low tables because it was quite uncomfortable to eat on and it was a struggle not to bump into my friends when we were eating.

The menu changes depending on the time you go; my friends and I went at a time that would be considered late lunch so the menu had limited choices—they were mostly light bar snacks. However, we only went there to try their signature duck and waffle. We ordered that and the vegetarian version of the duck and waffle which was substituted with deep fried mushrooms.

Both dishes had plain waffles topped with the respective protein choice and a sunny side up duck egg served with maple syrup. I was skeptical about the sweet and savoury combination, but the maple syrup gave it a sweet kick which surprisingly paired well with the duck and mushrooms.

The roasted duck was tender and juicy, the mushrooms were golden and crispy; both complementing the plain waffles.

We also ordered the citrus remix cocktail which was just as the name suggests; the citrus-y taste gave our tastebuds a refreshing feeling, but I think the ice-to-drink ratio could be better because the ice was filled to the brim of the small cup.

What is interesting is that they are open 24/7 so you can go there for an early breakfast or have a midnight snack and drinks with friends, which is a rare opening time in this great city.

I suggest booking in advanced before you go here because it might be full, depending on the time you go. My friends and I did not actually book a table but we were fortunate enough to come at a time where they had space to accommodate us.

This restaurant is on the pricier side and the service tax was quite high but if you have the budget or maybe would like to treat yourself to something nice then I would recommend this place.
